“When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” John Muir
My name is Emma Herman-Smith and in August 2014 I will begin the walk of a thousand miles, raising money for Paddlers for Life UK and the John Muir Trust along the way.
With somewhat more than the fabled ‘twist of tea and hunk of bread’, I will follow in the footsteps of Scottish-born American naturalist John Muir who, in 1867, walked from Jeffersonville, Indiana to the Gulf of Mexico on a ‘floral pilgrimage’. At Cedar Keys, where he sailed on to Cuba, I will continue on to Sarasota to take part in the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission’s Dragon Boat Festival – ‘A Celebration of Life’.

Starting in Muir’s birthplace of Dunbar, East Lothian I will sail by cargo ship from Southampton to New York – this being the most environmentally friendly way to cross the Atlantic. From there I will travel by train to Jeffersonville and start walking…..
